President William Ruto was in attendance as Football Kenya Federation Premier League side AFC Leopards ended their 60th anniversary celebration in style.

AFC Leopards managed a 4-3 win over the visiting Spanish side, AE Ramassa. Ingwe fielded former players in their starting XI who had to work harder after going down first.

Ramassa broke the deadlock first at Nyayo Stadium before Michael Khamati equalised for the Kenyan giants, and the scoreline stayed at 1-1 at the halftime break.

The winning goal was scored by Charles Okwemba, and the giants held onto the lead to claim the win on their big day.

Before the match against the Spanish fourth-tier side, the current AFC Leopards players had played against Premier League rivals Shabana and Gor Mahia. In both games, they managed one-all draws.

Brian Yakhama, a signing from Nzoia Sugar before the current season began, scored for Ingwe before Austin Odhiambo pulled one back for Gor Mahia.

Kevin Kimani scored the goal for AFC Leopards from the penalty spot against Shabana, who equalised with a goal from Japhet Lihanda in the second half.

AFC Leopards legends and their counterparts from Gor Mahia also had time to clash in a match that the former won by a 1-0 margin. Ingwe’s women’s side was also involved, and they were held to a 1-1 draw by Kisii Ladies, an affiliate female team for Shabana.

Apart from President Ruto, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, among other leaders, were in attendance.

History, success

The celebrations, which have been held for 12 days with various activities taking place, gave Ingwe a chance to celebrate their history and past successes.

“The club’s growth has been marked by significant achievements, including winning the Kenyan Premier League 13 times, the Kenyan Cup 10 times, and the CECAFA Club Championship five times.

“As a club, we are happy to mark our 60th anniversary, which is a great milestone in football history in this country. We are happy to celebrate this important occasion with our partners within the country and beyond who have supported us together with great football supporters from all walks of life,” Leopards remarked in a previous statement.

After the glamorous event, Ingwe fans will now hope that the club will fight hard and start winning titles.

They have been a laughing stock, especially in the Premier League, where their last success dates back to 1998, with their arch-rivals Gor Mahia dominating season after season.
