Kenya 7s rugby team commonly known as Shujaa, clinched a thrilling victory against Portugal in the Challenger Series match held at Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The intense encounter saw Shujaa secure a hard-fought 19-12 win, demonstrating their resilience.

Kenya 7s in Dubai

Prior to the match, Shujaa had showcased their prowess by emerging victorious in the Challenger Series opening event in Dubai.

Eager to maintain their winning streak, they entered the clash against Portugal oozing with confidence.

Despite facing early pressure from the Portuguese side, Shujaa quickly turned the tide in their favor. Kevin Wekesa’s remarkable run from the trybox resulted in the opening try, propelling Shujaa to a 7-0 lead after a successful conversion.

Portugal responded with a try by João Afra Rosa, narrowing the gap, but their conversion attempt fell short, allowing Shujaa to maintain a slender lead.

However, Shujaa encountered a setback when Dennis Abukuse received a yellow card, reducing them to six players.

Seizing the opportunity, Portugal capitalized on the numerical advantage, with João Vaz Antunes scoring under the posts to take the lead. The successful conversion gave Portugal a 12-7 advantage at halftime.

Kenya 7s fightback

Undeterred, Shujaa staged a strong comeback in the second half. Tony Omondi’s quick reflexes led to a crucial try, leveling the scores and setting the stage for a thrilling finale.

In the dying minutes of the game, Chrissant Ojwang, coming off the bench, displayed exceptional speed and skill to outpace his marker and secure a vital try, securing victory for Shujaa with a final score of 19-12.
