Kenyans love avocadoes. They not only make githeri taste better, but also the oily fruit is a must-have accompaniment for nyama choma’s kachumbari.

But avocadoes too got a bad reputation after they caused the death of a bodyguard to Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a in September 2016.

The victim, Eliud Muchiri Gathangira, died in an accident along the Thika Superhighway.

An eyewitness said Gathangira was speeding when he suddenly drove into a pile of avocados that had spilled on the road following an earlier accident involving a pick-up truck.

“The pickup had littered the road with avocados. Muchiri hadn’t seen them and drove over them, making the car he was driving veer off the road and land into a ditch,” the witness said
