Second kin lost to brutality as wave grips city
The 20-year-old woman stabbed to death by her boyfriend in Biafra, Nairobi was the sister to one of the boys who were brutally murdered by the self-confessed serial killer, the late Masten Wanjala, in October 2021.
Serah Nzula Musyoki was found with several stab wounds on her chest in her house on Sunday night long after the attack, according to the police.
Her death brings to about 25, the number of women killed in the last two months, according to police records.
Tragedy has struck twice for the family of Felista Wayua, who has been left heartbroken after tragically losing two of her children in less than three years in very brutal ways.
Wayua’s daughter, Nzula, is said to have had a fight with the boyfriend, leading to their separation. The man got angry and would occasionally send the girl threatening messages, according to the police.
The matter was reported to the police and investigations launched but he managed to attack and seriously injure her, before he could be arrested.
Pronounced dead
She was rushed to Mother and Child Hospital along Yusuf Haji Avenue but was transferred to Mama Lucy Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said the attacker, aged 22, who is known to the family as her boyfriend is at large and efforts to trace him are ongoing.
The country has witnessed a surge in such killings in the recent past, according to police records.
To address the increasing killings, the Internal Security Principal secretary Dr Raymong Omollo held a consultative meeting with PS Anne Wangombe (Gender and Affirmative Action) and PS Betty Muganda (Higher Education and Research) to deliberate on effective and lawful strategies, to safeguarding our women and girls against potential predators.
The officials noted that most cases involve intimate partners or known individuals to the victims, and in some cases financial aspects often intertwine. For Wayua’s family, it has been a double tragedy.
In October 2021, the remains of her 12-year-old Junior Mutuku Musyoki, who disappeared on July 7, 2021 was found alongside that of Charles Opindo Bala were found in Githaruru in Kabete where they had been dumped after being abducted from Majengo.
Demanded ransom
The two had been murdered by Wanjala who later contacted Musyoki’s mother, Felista Wayua, demanding a Sh50,000 ransom for her son’s freedom. She reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
Wanjala had once been remanded at Kabete Approved School for truancy, hence his thorough knowledge of the area where the three bodies were recovered.
Investigations revealed that Wanjala, who has killed a total of 13 people, and he also confessed to have been kidnapping and killing children in shocking detailed information.
In his earlier statement, Wanjala a former remandee at the Kabete Approved School, admitted to killing at least ten children in Nairobi and Bungoma counties.
Detectives had revealed that he confessed to having been murdering his victims who he stupefied using a white substance in powder and liquid forms.
Wanjala had also killed a 13-year-old boy only identified as Aaron in his home village of Kimilili, Bungoma county.
Wanjala, on his part, would flee the village, never to be seen or heard from until his arrest in connection with the murder of two minors.
According to the sources, the suspect would frequently commute from Kitengela to California estate in Eastleigh area to play football with boys from the neighbourhood.
The vampire escaped from Jogoo Police Station on the day he was to be arraigned for several murder charges. He was on October 15, 2021 lynched by mob in Kabuchai, Bungoma County where he travelled to after escaping from custody.
Police records indicate there has been an increase in killings across the country with some suspected to be ritual killings. Most of the victims have been women.
On Saturday, a section of women staged protests in major towns in the country to condemn what they termed as femicide.
They called on authorities to address the deaths. Police records also indicate there have been killings perpetrated by men who are in family or intimate partner relationships.
On Friday, for example, a 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing his wife at her parents’ home in Kipsolu, Kericho County over a marital dispute.
The suspect had travelled from Borborwet to his wife’s home to sort out their domestic issues.
The deceased woman identified as Lonah Chepkemoi, 27 had left the suspect’s home to her home after a domestic disagreement, police and her family said.
This forced the suspect to follow the now deceased woman to her parents’ home to sort out their domestic issues.
In the process, a quarrel broke out between them and the man picked a knife and stabbed Chepkemoi on the left lateral side of the neck.
