The body of a 19-year-old girl who went missing early November was finally found at the Busia County Referral Hospital mortuary following a botched forced abortion.

Police said they have recovered the deceased’s blood-stained clothes in Nambale, Busia county and have launched investigations.

The girl had been missing for a month until December 10 when the parents were informed that her body was lying at the mortuary.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that she had been pregnant and was forced to perform an abortion,” police said.

Detectives visited the scene and established that the girl’s left index toe was crushed.

The boyfriend, who took the body to the mortuary and has since been arrested, claimed the teen died after the botched abortion at a private clinic in the area.

He led the detectives to the clinic where the alleged abortion took place and items used to aid the abortion were recovered.

A foetus was recovered behind the house of the boyfriend where police had visited. Some of the deceased’s clothes had been burnt but the detectives managed to recover her blood-stained skirt and pants and bandages.

“The probe also seeks to establish the motive behind the burning of the clothes,” police said.
Health experts have warned about the rising numbers teenagers opting for unsafe abortions that have resulted in death, illness and infertility.
