In its bid to clean up the higher education sector, the government has declared war against bogus and unaccredited colleges that have been cashing in from unsuspecting parents and learners following increased demand for higher education.

Timothy Nyongesa, the director in charge of innovation at Technical and Vocational and Training Authority (TVETA) decried that numerous unregistered colleges have mushroomed in various towns across the country.

As a result, Nyongesa said that the government is set to begin bringing out of business, all illegally operating tertiary institutions to restore sanity in the crucial sub-sector with an ultimate goal of offering an assurance of quality to students and their parents alike.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of over 700 graduands at Jodan College in Thika, Kiambu County themed towards realisation of competency-based training and technologically equipped workforce, Nyongesa upheld that TVETA will continue to undertake its regulatory role of developing standards, accrediting institutions and trainers therein alongside quality audit of institutions.

He stated that massive closure of uncooperative institutions is set to be undertaken to protect learners and stop them from causing unfair competition with the fully accredited colleges.

“The authority undertakes a regular monitoring and evaluation of training institutions across the country and will not hesitate to close down those found non-compliant,” he said. The official urged parents to do due diligence before enrolling their children to various institutions to undertake various professional programs to confirm their accreditation and suitability to offering quality education.
