Quickmart Supermarket has distanced itself from a statement doing rounds on social media calling out leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza government for allegedly using items on promotion to mislead the general public that the cost of living had started coming down.

The retailer, in a post on X (formally Twitter), termed the statement as false and misleading.

“Beware of misinformation! The above message is false and should be ignored,” Quickmart Kenya captioned a photo of the fake statement on Monday, November 27.

The fake statement surfaced on social media after a section of leaders in the Kenya Kwanza administration including Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi announced that the price of a 2 kg packet of maize flour had dropped to Ksh130 from Ksh230.

Speaking during a random shopping trip at city supermarkets on Friday, November 24, Linturi said the prices would drop below Ksh120 in the coming days.

The CS attributed the drop in unga prices to the government’s fertiliser subsidy program unveiled last year.

“I’m happy to note that in all the major supermarkets, the unga prizes have reduced from a high of Ksh 235 last year to a low of up to Ksh130 per 2kg packet. I commend our farmers for their efforts on the farms to feed our great nation,” Linturi stated.

He added: “The government of President William Ruto will work tirelessly to bring down the cost of food.”

Some of the areas the CS visited included Kawangware, Kibera, Utawala, and Athi River in Machakos County, where he also surveyed the cost of rice and sugar.

However, some Kenyans were sceptical of the CS’s remarks with some saying they were yet to see a substantial drop in prices in their regions.
