Shock hit Nyacaba village in Juja, Kiambu County, after a pack of hyenas mauled a nine-year-old boy to death.

The boy, who is said to have been in the company of five others, was leaving church on Saturday evening when the incident happened.

According to residents, the boys fled for their lives when a pack of hyenas attacked them only for one of them to fall and was killed by the wild animals.

The boy, a grade six pupil, is the son of Peter Ngugi, the first MCA for Witeithie Ward.

According to Eliud Waboro and Peter Kinyanjui who are residents, the boy was attacked while his friends fled.

After receiving the shocking information and screaming for help, the parents rushed to the scene only to find the boy’s dismembered hand and his clothes.

“Around 7pm screams were heard. I gathered that the boys were returning home from church where they were undergoing brigade training classes. On their way home, a pack of hyenas attacked them only for one of them to fall,” narrated Kinyanjui.

Residents took issue with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for not doing enough to protect residents from wildlife. They called for prompt intervention to avert such tragedies in future.

They further accused owners of huge chunks of undeveloped land which the said are a haven for wild animals.

“These parcels of land that have remained undeveloped for years. They should either be farmed or sold to developers to facilitate development. This way, hyenas will go back to the forest,” Waboro said.
