Police officer charged with murder of husband
A police constable accused of killing her estranged husband last month pleaded not guilty to the murder charge at Eldoret High Court yesterday.
Lilian Biwott, 32, of the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit attached to the Kenya Bureau of Standards Eldoret appeared before Justice Reuben Nyakundi.
The accused was charged that on the night of October 9, 2023 at Kimumu estate on the Eldoret-Iten highway in Moiben, Uasin Gishu County, she murdered Victor Kipchumba, 36.
Before she took her plea, the Judge asked her whether she knew why she had been brought to court to which she replied that it was because of the murder of her husband.
Biwott further told Justice Nyakundi that she was aware of the consequences of the murder charge facing her.
The mother of four children is suspected of shooting her husband, who is a former matatu driver, 11 times at their rental house in Eldoret following a family row. He died on the spot.
She is represented by Oscah Oduor while the prosecution is led by David Fedha.
The court was jammed with her relatives while family members of the deceased sat on the opposite side of the courtroom.
The deceased’s family, through State counsel David Fedha, have opposed the application by the accused to be released on bond.
They argued that their life would be in grave danger in the event the accused is freed on bond.
The court directed the matter to be mentioned on November 23 when the court will give further directions on bond application by the accused.
