Kenya’s wheelchair basketball team seeks support from the government for Olympic dreams
Kenya wheelchair basketball team is pleading with the Ministry of Sports Arts and Culture to bolster them as they gear up for the Para Africa Games in Ghana slated to take place from September 3 to 13, battling it out for the Paris 2024 Olympics qualification slot.
Speaking exclusively to People Sport yesterday at their training base in Nairobi, Nyayo National Stadium basketball court, team captain Caroline Wanjera was worried and so was federation chairperson Alfred Simiyu. “By now we were supposed to have started residential camp but have been waiting for the past two weeks for that to happen. We don’t have much time left and as you can see some of our players are not here because they reside in other Counties,” said Wanjera.
Wheelchair Basketball Federation chairperson Alfred Simiyu said they had communicated earlier to their umbrella body Kenya Paralympic Committee regarding their concerns and are still waiting for the response.
“We qualified both our men’s and women’s teams for the All Africa Games five months ago during the East Africa regional tournament in Tanzania,” said Simiyu.
