As Shabana FC celebrated on the streets of Kisii on Saturday following a successful campaign in the FKF-National Super League — which saw them emerge Champions with 73 points — there was literally drama in other parts of the country as the 2022/23 season ended.

With the two automatic slots for Premiership promotion confirmed as Shabana and Murang’a Seal sailed through, all eyes are now firmly focused on the Premier League Playoffs that begin on Wednesday with a return leg slated for coming Saturday.

Shabana, trained by Sammy Okoth, had Vincent Onchiri to thank for a brace against Kisumu All-Stars FC in their 2-0 win at Gusii Stadium in front of a home mammoth crowd.

So far, it is confirmed that Migori Youth are the club that will be scheduled to meet Wazito FC for the golden ticket to the 23/24 season in the top tier.

However, in the lead-up to the finals, there was a bit of drama on and off the pitch in crucial matches. In the game pitting Murang’a Seal FC and hosts Gusii FC played at Awendo Green Stadium, officials had to start the match late following issues concerning the inadequacies of the ambulance provided.

The medical van was said to be poorly stocked thus drawing protests from the Seal traveling party. In a game that was considered important for the visitors, this was deemed as an unnecessary distraction but ultimately when they turned up to play, the match ended in a 2-2 result despite going down 2-0 at the break to Gusii.

The result means Seal under Vincent Nyaberi finished second with 69 points and will be making their debut in the Premier League as rank outsiders.

Probably, the most eye-catching event that took place on deadline day was at Migori Stadium where hosts Migori Youth earned three free points and two goals (walkover) following failure by the would-be opponents Mully Children’s Family FC failing to show up.

There were lots of murmurs and innuendos that characterized the aftermath of that ordeal with many conspiracy theories being thrown about.

The import of that occurrence was that Migori Youth under Kevin Oluoch all but made it for the crucial forthcoming playoffs after finishing the season on 62 points in what has otherwise been a successful campaign for the border team.

At Wundanyi Stadium in Taita Taveta, the previous third-place holders, Mara Sugar FC, must have left with egg on their faces after learning of what transpired at Migori.

Even so, Francis Xavier’s men laboured to an all but worthless 1-0 win against home team Mwatate United that took them to 60 points.
