Activities to mark the International Nurses Week in Nyandarua county came to a close on Sunday with calls for residents to enroll in the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to ease their burden of paying for hospital services.

Top officials in the department of health led by the County Executive, Dr Zakayo Kariuki Gichuki said if the residents joined NHIF in large numbers, the devolved unit can be able to improve on health infrastructure using reimbursement from the health Insurer.

Gichuki who was accompanied by County Director of Health Martha Mwathi and Chief Officer in the department Josephine Muiru said the county is improving health infrastructure to enable its hospitals to be proper level four and five facilities for better services.

“Residents can assist the county to fast track improvement of our health infrastructure by enrolling in NHIF in large numbers like in other counties,” he said.

He said the county will soon pass a bill to ring-fence funds that the Health department gets in NHIF reimbursements so that it is ploughed back to improve hospitals. He said the health sector in Nyandarua has made major strides compared to other counties and urged residents to be going to hospitals for check-ups instead of only going to the health facilities when they fall sick.
