Kenyatta University (KU) women’s football side beat United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) 3-1 at the ongoing Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) national open championships at Moi University grounds Annex in Eldoret yesterday.

The Desert Roses were too strong for USIU with Grace Wekesa breaking the deadlock after just six minutes and they held onto the lead until half-time.

On resumption, Irene Kariuki scored the second before Mercy Adong completed the rout later on.

In men’s football, hosts Moi University played out to a barren draw with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

In hockey, USIU men began their title defence on a high, following a 2-1 win over JKUAT.

Brian Kiplimo opened the scoring in the first quarter for USIU before Paul Bakasa levelled for JKUAT in the third quarter but Jamleck Maina sealed the victory in the dying minutes of the encounter.

“We are here with the sole mission of defending our title. Even after winning the opening match, we need to take each game at a time,” said USIU head coach Wilson Otieno.
