Gor Mahia pips Bidco to retain league lead as Mathare cage AFC Leopards
Gor Mahia have reminded anyone who cares that they are hell-bent on reclaiming the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title with a 1-0 win over Bidco United at Nyayo National Stadium.
K’Ogalo not only cemented their lead at the top but also had their on-song striker Benson Omala stretch his tally to 19 goals which is the highest thus far in the season. Omala was literally on fire and duly struck in the 17th minute moments after his strike partners Peter Lwasa and Boniface Omondi had threatened Bidco’s defence line several times.
Gor’s win was phenomenal in that they have taken a five point lead, thanks to slumps by their closest challengers KCB and Nzoia Sugar which slowed down their challenge for the title
KCB could not have asked for a nightmarish outing after falling 2-1 to Kariobangi Sharks at Kasarani Annex.
Incidentally it was two-goal hero Julius Masaba who peppered the Sharks with the industrious forward opening his goal account in the 32nd minute before adding another in the 51st minute.
In the second half, KCB appeared to have benefited from coach Zedekiah Otieno’s pep-talk and did pull one back through Francis Kahiro in the 69th minute but it was too little too late for the bankers who remain in the second position with 36 points from nineteen matches. Like KCB, Nzoia Sugar shot themselves on the foot after falling by a similar margin to Bandari at Mbaraki sports ground in Mombasa.
Nzoia who are touted as one of biggest challengers of Gor’s surge to their 20th top-tier league title proved stubborn in the match played under sweltering heat before cracking in the 60th minute thus giving leeway for Joe Waithera to give the Dockers the all-important goal.
However, the biggest upset was in the form of Mathare United, who shocked Gor Mahia 2-1 a fortnight ago, administering a similar dose to AFC Leopards at Kasarani Main Stadium.
Mathare who are increasingly giving big teams scant respect needed George Owino’s 71st minute goal to stun struggling but wasteful Ingwe in a highly physical encounter.
Kenya Police needed Duke Abuya’s 86th minute strike to silence Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
At Kasarani Annex, Ulinzi Stars had the shock of their lives in a 1-0 defeat by underdogs Posta Rangers.
It was a balanced game though Rangers were able to utilize their only chance, Timothy Otieno disentangling himself from his markers to notch the winning goal after the half hour mark.
