Kindiki meets Maraga-led police reforms taskforce
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Monday, January 9 met the newly sworn-in taskforce on police and prison reforms chaired by the retired Chief Justice David Maraga.
The 23-member taskforce was appointed by President William Ruto in a gazette notice dated December 21, 2022.
“Government is committed to improving the terms and conditions of service for officers within the security sector including National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Prisons Service (KPS).
“It is intended to reform the NPS and KPS by professionalizing their service, modernizing their equipment, and creating a framework for career progression.
“This morning I had an entry meeting with the Presidential taskforce on the review of terms and conditions of service and other reforms of the NPS and KPS chaired by the Chief Justice (Rtd) Justice David Maraga at the Ministry headquarters, Harambee house, Nairobi,” Kindiki said.
Carole Kariuki will deputise Maraga.
Moffat Kangi, John Moyaki, Ibrahim Guyo, Richard Kirundi, Elizabeth Mueni, Roseline Odede, Joash Dache, and Doreen Muthaura were sworn in as members of the taskforce by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
Others are Albert Mwenda, Terry Maina, Hassan Mohamed, Capt. (Rtd) Simiyu Werunga, Mutuma Ruteere, Anne Ireri, Stephen Kayongo, Jafaar Mohammed, Sammy Chepkwony, and Khadija Mire.
The team will be assisted by three joint secretaries.
Police reforms
“The terms of reference of the taskforce are to review the human capital management and development policies with a view of examining and reviewing standards and practices in recruitment, deployment, transfers, training, career progression, performance-based and competitive promotions, reward, exit, and post-exit management,” Ruto stated in the gazette notice.
He added: “The imperative of strengthening the security sector remains a national priority and the primary means of surmounting the emerging and dynamic security challenges we face.”
