Elected members of Murang’a County Assembly will get a Ksh9 million kitty to initiate development projects, Governor Irungu Kang’ata promised on Sunday, October 24.

The county boss said the kitty will help ward representatives address the needs of locals.

Kang’ata’s promise

Kang’ata divulged that the fund would be a replica of the ward development fund but will be called community project funds.

Speaking in Murang’a, the governor said he is awaiting the approval of the supplementary budget by the assembly to enable him to disburse the kitty.

He said Ksh8 million will be for development projects while Ksh1 million will be set aside for bursary for needy students.

“Ward representatives are closer to the people and are in a position to know the specific needs in the community,” he said.

“Already the MCAs have listed the projects presented to them by the residents and they will be implemented once we get the funds”added Kang’ata.

According to Kang’ata, the kitty will be monitored to ensure they will be no misappropriation of public funds.

At the same time, the governor said the county has realized increased revenue collection three weeks after the automation of the revenue collection.

He revealed that the county revenue had doubled adding that this is a clear indication that money was being lost through the manual collection.

“From car parking, we used to get Ksh30,000 and we are now getting Ksh60,000. From the quarry, we are now collecting Ksh50,000 up from Ksh20,000,” the governor disclosed.

The county boss said he is aiming at Ksh1.2 billion up from Ksh500 million which the county has been collecting.

“Digital revenue collection is still at the piloting stage and we will roll it out in all other sectors,” Kang’ata said.

He also revealed that the financial audit process in the county had been completed and promised to publish verified pending bills in due course.

“If any contractor does not appear in the list they have the right to seek redress over the matter through the available channels among them being the auditor general,” he remarked.
