Mombasa gubernatorial election might be postponed – Chebukati
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has hinted at the possibility of postponing the Mombasa gubernatorial election if the ongoing court battles persist.
Chebukati was referring to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s case in which he filed an appeal at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) to challenge the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold his impeachment.
“If the decisions of the court are going to throw us completely out of balance then we shall postpone elections for those selective posts only.
“We are guided by judgments of the court and we are law-abiding but again when it becomes impossible for us to perform our function then we shall postpone elections for the respective positions,” Chebukati assured.
Mombasa governor race
On Monday, the electoral commission through Mombasa County Returning Officer Swalhah Yusuf revoked Sonko’s candidature for the Mombasa governor’s seat after the Supreme Court ruled that he was legally removed from office in December 2020.
In a letter addressed to Sonko, Yusuf indicated that following the supreme court judgement, the former Nairobi County boss was disqualified from holding any public office.
“In adherence to the Supreme Court judgement you are therefore disqualified from holding any public office and thus disqualified from contesting and being elected as the governor of Mombasa or any other County. Your candidature is invalidated and your certificate revoked,” the County Returning Officer stated.
