Recently, we were in Machakos county with a local rally team that was out to test their new car around some bushes. After a generous coating of dust and partial deafness, we hit Mombasa Road en route to Nairobi.

Our driver, who is a good friend and prone to flipping the bird at other motorists, was particularly busy on this occasion.

From drivers changing lanes without warning to people moving to overtake when you’re already committed to an overtake yourself, it becomes apparent that sometimes the only reason more of us don’t die on these roads is sheer luck.

Overtaking actually is a recipe for disaster if poorly executed. So, what do you need to do?

Use your mirrors and indicate

As in the case above, the person pulled out just when we were beside him and had it not been for the impeccable survival instincts of my friend, we would have traded paint.

Set the indicator and check your mirrors well before making the move.

Abort if the road does not allow

A safe overtaking is the goal. Be it from road signage or common sense – do not attempt to make a pass at a place where you are not confident.

Be patient

This is a rule of thumb. Patience is to be exercised at all times on the road. The stakes rise dramatically when there is poor visibility, twisty roads, a train of cars, at night, heavy rain and many other scenarios.

Take your time and get it right.

Picking your moment

This is the sketchy bit. Choosing when to start overtaking is not an exact science; your speed, the speed of the vehicle you’re overtaking and the position of oncoming traffic all come into play.

How fast your car can accelerate is also something to factor in. Make your move when it’s safest and at a time when you won’t cause even the slightest worry to the other drivers.

So, the moment you make oncoming traffic let off the gas out of concern, you should have your licence taken away.
