After weeks of meditation, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has finally joined Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja movement ahead of the August election.

Karua first met Raila in a highly guarded meeting at Serena Hotel in Nairobi before declaring her support for the ODM party leader’s presidential bid in the coming polls.

Martha’s move to join Raila’s camp comes a day after she claimed that One Kenya Alliance (OKA), an alliance she was previously part of, is dead after other principals – Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Cyrus Jirongo (UDA) and Gideon Moi (Kanu) – signed a coalition deal with Azimio la Umoja.

Speaking during the announcement event, Martha said that she chose to join Azimio because it has a good number of people who believe in the rule of law and believe in serving the interest of Kenyans.

“I am here to confirm that from now onwards, Narc Kenya and I are supporting the Azimio presidential candidate Rt Hon. Raila Odinga and we do this without any advocation,” Martha said.

“As we said before, Narc Kenya was looking for leaders who have demonstrated track records of being selfless, have put the interest of the nation above themselves and fulfilled their promises.”

On his side, the ODM leader expressed his joy for Martha to support his bid to clinch the presidency noting that he and the Narc Kenya leader have come a long way in the deliberation history of the country.

According to Raila, Martha did not have any choice but to join his side noting that what Azimio la Umoja stands for matches the former minister’s principles.

“I am proud to receive Martha on our side. I don’t think she had any other choice because the difference between us and our competitors is like day and night. Our competitors defend the system while here we are revolutionaries,” Raila said.

The union between Raila and Martha comes amid calls by various political players from Mt Kenya for the Narc Kenya leader to be Raila’s running mate in the coming elections.

In what seemed like a response to the calls, Raila said that he will soon reveal the role Martha will play in his government. Without revealing what role it will be, the former Prime Minister said that Martha will hand a very vital role in his team.

“We want to march together with Martha and she will soon get a number to play. You will all know her role when the real game begins,” he said.
