Property worth millions of shillings was reduced to ashes after a huge fire gutted Mathai Supermarket in Murang’a County on Sunday night.

The fire is said to have started at around 11.00pm from inside the building and spread fast into the rest of the building.

The fire fighters had a difficult time to put out the fire, but they got a backup from Kiambu and Kirinyaga counties.

According to Murang’a county commander, Josphat Kinyua, the cause of the fire is yet to be established as it started at a point where mattresses are kept.

He, however, said the investigators are on standby to gain access into the building once the fire has been completely put out.

“We have not been able to establish anything so far, but we have a team of eight officers who will conduct probe into the incident,” he said.

The police commander also said they will review CCTV footage and other crucial details that could help unravel the mystery of the fire incident.

The incident comes barely three months after another supermarket in Ruiru belonging to the same proprietor went up in flames destroying property worth millions of shillings.
