Wahinya, Ashiundu to debut for Simbas in South Africa
Blakblad’s play maker Brian Wahinya and Kabras Sugar winger Derrick Ashihundu are national rugby team, Simbas, latest call ups ahead of the quadrangular 15 aside rugby tournament slated for South Africa next month.
Jone Kubu, who made a dream debut for Simbas in the recently concluded Africa cup matches, has also been incorporated in the 30-man squad which is skippered by Kabras Sugar forward Dan Sikuta.
The final squad which was released by head coach Paul Odera will be pepped up by two foreign based players led by the vice captain of the tour – Malcolm Onsando from Sportive Dinamo Bucharest and Andrew Simiyu from the University of Johannesburg.
Also in the fray are Olympians Vincent Onyala and Jacob Ojee, who last tasted international duty in 2019, alongside another returnee in Nondescripts back-rower Fidel Oloo.
Simbas will jet out for South Africa on November 3 where they shall pitch camp for 23 days ahead of their match against Currie Cup champion team on November 6.
The Currie Cup champion team is composed of players selected by the fans from seven of the Championship participating teams.
In the first semi final, the Kenyans will next face Namibia for the first time since the 2018 Africa Gold Cup with Zimbabwe battling Brazil in the other semi-final.
The winners in the last four stages will face off for the title while with the losers will meet in the third-place playoffs in Stellenbosch on November 20..
Simbas will wrap up their tour on November 25 against Cheetahs in a match slated for Bloemfontein.
In the meantime, Simbas first opponent,the Currie Cup Select team, have named the team which shall do duty in the championships.
Schalk Erasmus will be deployed at hooking position with Bulls’ Simphiwe Matanzima and Sharks’ Ntuthuko Mchunu serving as props.
Reniel Hugo and PJ Steenkamp will run errands as locks with Arno Botha (Vodacom Bulls), Phumzile Maqondwana (New Nation Pumas), and Nama Xaba (DHL Western Province) filling the back row roles.-Alex Njue
