The differences between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto is no longer a secret.

The two have traded salvos at each other and this escalated in the month of July.

Uhuru is publicly campaigning for Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition flag bearer Raila Odinga, a departure from the 2017 Uhuru’s promise of yangu kumi, ya Ruto kumi.

The two have since used crises and promises to attack each other politically.

Unga crisis

Last month, Kenya witnessed a surge in unga prices from Ksh110 to Ksh220. Ruto’s camp used the crises to gain political mileage saying Uhuru had failed Kenyans by not fulfiling one of his Big 4 agendas on food security.

The Kenya Kwanza team exploited the opportunity to campaign against Uhuru-backed Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga, saying the handshake duo had failed Kenyans by not controlling the food prices.

This did not sit well with the President who accused Ruto and his team of playing politics with the cost of unga.

“My appeal to the political class is to exercise civic responsibility. I invite all of them to join the community not of mourners or grumblers even when you serve in government, but I ask you all to join the community of solution givers for this is where the future of our country lies,” Uhuru said.

Ruto hit out at Uhuru saying: “Ati bei ya unga imeenda juu kwa sababu ya vita kule Ukraine? Si vita inaendelea bado Ukraine? Si leo wamesema watateremsha bei ya unga? Kumaanisha ile walikuwa wanatuambia eti mambo ya Ukraine ilikuwa tu ni kutuhadaa.”

Uhuru claims Ruto is a liar

On June 30, Ruto launched his manifesto that highlited the failures of Jubilee government and how a Kenya Kwanza government will solve them.

Uhuru responded by saying all what Ruto was promising were lies and he was not going to fulfil them.

“We have seen leaders moving around making a lot of noise about what they will do, yet they had an opportunity to serve this country for the last eight years,” Uhuru had said.

Ruto responded: “Don’t worry about the manifesto my friend Uhuru Kenyatta. I will make sure this country moves forward. You know the capacity I have.

“Many know my track record during our first term as Deputy President. We built a 700-kilometre railway, we built 10, 000 kilometres of road and connected eight million Kenyans to electricity.”

Death threats

On July 29, Ruto accused Uhuru of planning to harm him and his children.

“We are the ones who voted for you for the presidency, and now you want to threaten me? as long as you do not harm my children, We should respect each other,” Ruto said.

Uhuru responded: “Those telling me not to kill their children are only telling me not to do what they, themselves would do if they were in my position.

“That is what they just think about. That’s what they would do if they were in power. They are led by the devil. I am led by my God.”
